Rationale<\/strong><\/th>\nImprove international student experience and raise achievement through the implementation of a school- wide Post Graduate International student pre-induction and bridging course programme. Bridging Course Aims: <\/p>\n
    \n
  • To deliver a cross curricula short course for international PG students.<\/li>\n
  • Raise awareness amongst students of the differences in teaching and learning in British HE through the dissemination of research findings<\/li>\n
  • Support students in key skill areas of reading\/research, academic writing, critical thinking and technology in teaching and learning.<\/li>\n
  • Use subject relevant, embedded teaching techniques to deliver skills training.<\/li>\n
  • Introduce students to Learning Development Group Resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Description of Initiative<\/strong><\/th>\nSkills need to be delivered at a time which is most relevant to students. With agreement of Course Leaders, week 3 of teaching in term 1 was selected to deliver the Bridging Course.   There was a consensus that the course should have a \u00e2\u0080\u0098conference\u00e2\u0080\u0099 rather than \u00e2\u0080\u0098classroom\u00e2\u0080\u0099 feel. Students from all departments were invited to attend. There were 115 attendees over 3 days of teaching with a plenary session on the final day. If skills are not contextualised students lack engagement with the subject so peer review of past student work, supported by subject tutors was incorporated into the course. The Academic Librarian delivered an in-depth session using references from subject areas to demonstrate the most relevant uses of Summon for research purposes. A timetable of the sessions is attached in Appendix 1.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Ideas for adapting<\/strong><\/th>\nAs international student numbers grow it is anticipated that the Bridging Course will be further embedded into the School\u00e2\u0080\u0099s curriculum. This will mean more detailed future planning with academic colleagues. The project has produced a strong initial model which can be used to provide a basis for future practice. Indeed the Bridging Course is being repeated for January start students on the taught PG courses in February.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
