It also means patronising our 18-21 year old students with Mickey Mouse bullshit they\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve already learned in school and patronising our mature students by treating them like school kids.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\"><em>\u00e2\u0080\u009cEither they should be taught and assessed explicitly (and hence be part of the curriculum) &#8211; and that might be true of chemistry lab skills \u00e2\u0080\u0093 or they should be assumed as part of what any undergrad should already know \u00e2\u0080\u0093 and this applies to most study skills. Of course some students may lack the latter skills, in which case they need remedial work \u00e2\u0080\u0093 but that is what it is, remedial, not a core content of the curriculum at university.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>\u00e2\u0080\u009cFor undergrads that come straight from formal education, it means that their formal education has been insufficient.\u00c2\u00a0 Students with a solid set of A levels or equivalent (UCAS entry for my Course is 280) should, in my opinion, be able to write in grammatically correct English, have a good understanding of syntax and be able to<br \/>\nstructure written work coherently.\u00c2\u00a0 The fact that many students do not have these skills means they miss out on subject content and higher academic skills whilst academics teach them the difference between \u00e2\u0080\u0098weather\u00e2\u0080\u0099 and \u00e2\u0080\u0098whether\u00e2\u0080\u0099.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"LearnerDev\" style=\"background-color: #bbf0c5; border: #060 solid 1px !important; padding: 5px;\">\n<h4>Learner Developers&#8217; views<\/h4>\n<div>\n<div>Remedial = deficit model but everyone has something to learn<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">Students have not always learned what they should have at school so how do we cater for diverse learning experiences?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Who determines what is \u00e2\u0080\u0098genuine academic content\u00e2\u0080\u0099? What do we mean by skills? The heart of embedding is giving students what they need in order to develop.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">We should be teaching for learning rather than treating assessment as teaching and learning<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Panics over plagiarism and emphasis on employability work against teaching for learning<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"rteindent1\">Remedial attitudes rely on instrumentalist approach such as league tables and put the blame on students<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Embedding Skills is Remedial Academic perceptions \u00e2\u0080\u009cIt means cutting back on genuine academic content.
