Module Title NIE 2208 Enterprise: Electronic Product Design & Manufacture
Level Intermediate
Initiator/s Mark Dales
Rationale This module provides an introduction to business, finance, marketing, engineering management and design for manufacture (DFM) in the context of electronic product design and manufacturing.  It is intended to promote an understanding of the lifecycle process of product design and develop the skills required by professional engineers to play an active role in that process.

There is considerable emphasis on the development of team skills and students are allocated to a group for the duration of the course. Their abilities are developed as they each take on a range of team roles and responsibilities.

Description of Initiative PBL techniques are used extensively to confront groups with a series of related problems or scenarios.  These, together with a given set of learning outcomes for each session, form the starting point for agreed self study tasks.
Assessment

Reflective log and portfolio of PBL contributions (individual)

Group presentations and associated documentation (report, business plan)

PBL methods rely heavily on the full participation of all group members for their  effective operation.  For this reason attendance at all sessions is compulsory.    Valid reasons for all absences must be provided.  Any student whose overall attendance falls below 70%, without valid excuse, will automatically fail.

Ideas for adapting The use of problem-based learning to encourage development of skills
